Are you worried someone’s gambling too much?
There are many signs that someone has lost control and is gambling beyond their means. We’ve compiled a list of self-assessment questions that can be helpful in determining if someone you know may have a problem. More generally, there are four areas for you to keep an eye on:
How much time is being spent?
You’ve noticed that more and more time is being used to gamble. Maybe they are planning their days around playing. They may seem preoccupied, distant and more likely to prioritises gambling over other things that were previously more important in their lifes.
Are there money problems?
You may have noticed that money is disappearing from accounts. Or maybe they are borrowing money more often without being able to pay it back. They may have mentioned having money problems or are having trouble paying the bills, even with a steady income.
Are there mood changes?
You may have noticed a change in their mood recently. They may seem more irritable or worried than usual. You may pick up on signs of depression and anxiety, which weren’t there before.
Has behaviour changed?
It is not unusual that a person becomes isolated from their friends and relatives when there’s a problem. You may notice that they no longer want to participate in social activities or avoids social interaction.
If you’ve noticed signs of problem gambling in a friend or family member, it’s important to encourage them to seek help. Tread gently, they are probably in a vulnerable state. Expressing anger or frustration could make the situation worse and cause them to distance themselves further.
